New HP mobile to be powered by Android OS

Expectations were sky high when HP bought Palm OS back in 2010 for $1.2 Billion. I, among many others, thought that HP was just the right company to take a mobile OS of this calibre to another level. But things didn’t work out that way at all. In fact, the Touchpad was such a big disappointment that, it didn’t sell until the company slashed the prices by $100 along with the bundled software freebies. PCWorld gave the TouchPad 2.5 out of 5 stars owing to its slow-responsiveness. The company eventually open sourced WebOS back in 2012.

HP expects to run into some good fortunes by bringing out its new tablet running Android with Nvidia’s new Tegra 4 processor, as suggested by ReadWrite. Considering Android’s current market position in Mobile OS, this seems to be a good move for HP, for now at-least.

The company is probably going through one of the worst phases of its career, which is a common perception everyone appears to have these days. Although a recent survey by a research firm Canalys say otherwise. According to Canalys, HP shipped 15.0 million PCs, second only to Apple who sold 27 million, and beating Lenovo by 200,000 units to regain second place.

Google couldn’t have asked for a better timing. With iPad and iPad Mini both selling successfully, HP will certainly help them boost their market share in tablets. Also, If the company does decide to release its tablet this year, it would be the first tablet with Nvidia’s Tegra 4 processor. Lets see if Meg Whitman(CEO) changes her mind about not releasing a smartphone in 2013.

There are some private meetings scheduled by HP during the Mobile World Congress later this month in Barcelona. We will have more information on it only once it(Mobile World Congress) is over.
